7-Ingredient Homemade Tomato Sauce


Everyone needs a most simple homemade tomato sauce recipe. At first, it may seem easier just to buy a jar but then you run into unwanted added ingredients like sugar!  This quick and easy 7-Ingredient homemade tomato sauce can be made in a matter of minutes from on-hand ingredients you already have, this recipe is so simple to whip up in about 30 minutes. It freezes well if you want to gift it to someone in need or use it for meal prep at your house.

7-Ingredient Homemade Tomato Sauce

 Because there are only seven ingredients, feel free to doctor it up as you please. I’ll often add crushed red peppers and black pepper because I love spicy foods. I also sometimes crumble up a veggie burger to for added protein. I often stir in chopped mushrooms, diced bell pepper (whatever color you like), or chopped spinach or arugula. However you like to make it your own, I hope you enjoy this 7-ingredient homemade tomato sauce. It is absolutely packed with healthy nutrients like vitamin C and anti-cancer, heart healthy antioxidants like lycope which is enhanced by using canned or cooked tomatoes.

Instructions
  1. Heat olive oil over medium heat in a large saucepan. Add garlic and onion; sautee for 3-4 minutes until onion is translucent. Add remaining ingredients and simmer over low heat for 20 minutes, adding water if needed for consistency (expect that 1/2-1 cup may be required). Season with additional salt and pepper as needed.
Recipe Notes

Add sliced mushrooms or chopped bell pepper to yellow onion, garlic, olive oil sautee if desired for extra veggies. Serve over spiralized zucchini, whole wheat or bean pasta. Makes great leftovers and freezes well, too.
